WhatsApp will soon withdraw its support for Android and older iOS starting next year. Some cellphones are also threatened that they can no longer use this messaging application.

WhatsApp always asks its users to update their devices with the latest operating system in order to enjoy the best experience. They recently updated the FAQ on their official website about which operating systems will be supported in 2021.

Quoted from Livemint, Sunday (20/12/2020) WhatsApp can only be used on mobile phones with the Android 4.0.3 operating system or the latest. As for the iPhone, only devices running iOS 9 or later can enjoy WhatsApp.

Some phones that still use Android versions below 4.0.3, such as the HTC Desire, LG Optimus Black, Motorola Droid Razr and Samsung Galaxy S2 are threatened with being unable to use WhatsApp.

IPhone models that can no longer use WhatsApp are the iPhone 4 and previous generations. IPhone 4S, 5, 5S, 5C, 6, and 6S users must update their phones to iOS 9 or later to continue enjoying WhatsApp. IPhone 6 and 6S users can update their devices to the latest iOS 14 version.

Apart from the two operating systems above, WhatsApp can still be used on certain cellphones with the Kai OS 2.5.1 or later operating system, including JioPhone and JioPhone 2.

WhatsApp added that there is currently no option to transfer chat history between platforms, such as from iOS to Android and vice versa. But they do provide an option to export chat history as an email attachment.

To find out the operating system version on your Android phone, you can check it by opening the Settings application then looking for the About menu which is usually at the very bottom. If the version you are using is 4.0.3 or later, WhatsApp can still be used.

For iPhone users, you can check the iOS version used by opening Settings, then General and selecting the About option. If the version shown is iOS 9 or later, WhatsApp will still receive support next year.

Every year WhatsApp always stops its support for legacy cellphones and operating systems. Starting early in 2021, WhatsApp will no longer be able to be used on phones running Android 2.3.7 and below, as well as iPhones running iOS 8 and below.
